Celebration marks road opening

Community leaders and public safety officials lauded Tuesday's opening of a mile-long stretch of El Mirage Road as a major move that will save time and, potentially, lives.
Officials from Maricopa County, Sun City West and Corte Bella celebrated the completion of the first phase of a five-year project that will connect Loop 303 to El Mirage Road with a dedication ceremony Tuesday morning.
The celebration marked the official opening of about a mile-long, six-lane stretch of road that connects Loop 303 to Deer Valley Drive, just northeast of Sun City West and Corte Bella. The 10-month project cost about $7.1 million and is the first of three MCDOT is planning to alleviate traffic and congestion through Sun City West, Surprise, El Mirage and other unincorporated areas in the Northwest Valley.
"This opening of phase one of a three-phase project is very important to Sun City West because it now opens up the whole North Valley to us here," said Larry Woods, president of the Property Owners and Residents Association in Sun City West.
